MDHEWD welcomes ServMO, strengthening pathways from community service to education and employment for Missourians
Today, the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD) officially welcomes ServMO into the department, forming a unified partnership focused on community service, education advancement, and workforce development. ServMO, Missouri’s state commission for volunteerism and AmeriCorps programs, transfers to MDHEWD from the Department of Economic Development under House Bill 3279, signed by Governor Mike Kehoe on July 14, 2026. This transition comes on the same day MDHEWD celebrates the seven-year anniversary of its formation as a single department, bringing together the Missouri Department of Higher Education, the Division of Workforce Development, and the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center.
“Integrating ServMO into MDHEWD creates a powerful connection between community engagement, education, and career opportunity,” said Dr. Bennett Boggs, Commissioner of MDHEWD. “As we commemorate seven years as a unified department, this partnership not only reinforces the value of learning through service but also ensures that Missourians can translate their volunteer and AmeriCorps experiences into meaningful academic progress and long-term career success, representing a holistic approach to preparing individuals to thrive in Missouri’s evolving workforce.”
ServMO brings a long history of supporting volunteerism and AmeriCorps service across the state, offering Missourians valuable opportunities to develop skills, support their communities, and pursue education. This partnership aligns well as volunteers and AmeriCorps members use education awards for tuition or loan repayment, explore academic programs, build job‑ready skills through hands‑on service, and connect those experiences to Missouri’s workforce training opportunities. MDHEWD offers statewide resources that include college planning, financial aid guidance, apprenticeships, and workforce programs. Together, these strengths help volunteers and AmeriCorps members translate their service into education, training, credentials, and careers that support their personal growth and Missouri’s workforce needs.
