Department of Natural Resources awards $2 million in assistance to Moniteau County’s Public Water Supply District No. 1
District will make drinking water system improvements
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, OCT. 28, 2026 - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $2 million in financial assistance to Moniteau County’s Public Water Supply District No. 1 for upgrades to its drinking water supply, storage and distribution systems.
The water district expects the project to total $3.1 million and to complete it by January 2028. The improvements allow the district to continue providing its customers safe drinking water for years to come with a modern and well-functioning drinking water system.
Project funding consists of a $1.5 million grant and a $500,000 low-interest loan, both through the department’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The department estimates its funding will save the district’s ratepayers $1.5 million in principal and approximately $319,000 in interest over the loan’s 30-year term. The water district will also receive a $497,511 American Rescue Plan Act grant from the Moniteau County Commission and a $643,000 Small, Rural, and Tribal Drinking Water Assistance Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“While we often take it for granted, adequate drinking water infrastructure is critical to the quality of life of every Missourian and to the sustainability of communities and industries throughout the state,” said Jake Buxton, director of the Department of Natural Resources.
The department’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund finances improvements to water treatment plants, distribution systems and water storage and supply facilities. The fund also finances system interconnection and consolidation projects. Communities that borrow from the fund benefit from the below-market interest rate and from assistance a project manager provides throughout the project.
The department is committed to assisting Missouri communities with water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects. Through its Financial Assistance Center, the department provides funding opportunities for qualified communities with water quality, wastewater and drinking water infrastructure needs. This project will be funded wholly or in part with monies received from EPA.
